What is Respite Care?

Respite care provides the break you need to refresh and recharge – it’s a planned break from caregiving routines that still allows your loved one to be cared for at home, where they truly belong. Your respite caregiver will learn your family routine and caregiving needs, and make everyone’s life easier with respite care assistance that makes the most sense for you and your family.

What are the benefits of Respite Care?

There are benefits of respite care for both the client and the family caregiver. Some of those benefits include:

  • Relief for caregivers - Respite care provides caregivers with a much-needed break from caregiving duties. It gives them time to recharge and care for their health and well-being.
  • Allows caregivers to keep their job - For employed caregivers, having someone else take over their caregiving duties for a few hours or days can give them the break needed to maintain their job.
  • Improved mental health - Respite care can provide social and emotional benefits for caregivers and their loved ones. It provides opportunities for social interaction and stimulation for both. Respite care can also help to reduce caregiver stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Can be flexible - Respite care can be used on an as-needed basis when caregivers need a break from their duties. This flexibility can make respite care more affordable and accessible for many families.
  • Many options available- Many types of respite care services are available, including in-home respite, adult daycare, overnight respite, and short-term residential respite. Caregivers can choose the type of respite care that best meets their needs and the needs of their loved ones.
  • Typically covered by insurance plans - Most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover some type of respite care services. Caregivers should check with their insurance provider to see what types of services are covered under their plan.
  • Peace of mind - Caregivers will have peace of mind knowing that their loved one is in good hands while they are away.

Is respite care only for the elderly?

No. Respite care provides relief or assistance to caregivers that are providing support and care to their loved one regardless of age. You may be caring for a loved one after surgery, a person with disabilities, end-of-life care, and more.
