Elder Care in Suwanee GA

The importance of the Pain Awareness Month is to bring together consumer groups and health care professionals in an effort to increase the public’s awareness regarding the key issues Elder Care in Suwanee GAsurrounding pain and pain management.

Why is Pain Awareness Month Important?

Observing Pain Awareness Month is important for families of all kinds, not just those assisting aging loved ones. Chronic pain touches the lives of many individuals of all ages. However, when it affects the aging community, there are some special considerations elder care providers or family caregivers should pay again to when providing care.  Here are some common areas of chronic pain within the aging community:

  • Arthritis
  • Back pain
  • Headaches

How to Get Involved

The first thing families can do during Pain Awareness Month is get educated. According to researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine, “Nearly 100 million Americans experience chronic pain —more than those who have diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined.” When armed with information and education, families are better able to assist their aging loved ones in need of pain management during elder care. Throughout the month, events and activities will be held in hospitals and at healthcare facilities with the sole purpose of educating the community regarding pain and pain management.

Pain Treatments Available

The pain treatments available to aging loved ones are dependent upon the type of condition they have, pain they are experiencing, and other medical issues they may be experiencing. The family caregiver assisting them should research if their primary care physician is able to provide the necessary pain management services, or if a specialist is needed. If this has been a delicate topic of discussion in the past between family members and the aging loved one in the past, Pain Awareness month is an excellent opportunity to open up the doors of communication. Families can bring in information regarding pain treatments, research, and available treatment specialists in the area. That way, the aging loved one doesn’t feel like this topic of conversation isn’t being brought up again during an uncomfortable moment. The month of September can serve as a good platform for this discussion.
