Home Care in Sugar Hill GAWhen you are considering starting a home care relationship for your elderly loved one, it is important that you take the time to make sure that you are choosing the right type of care provider for her. One of the best parts about having a home care provider is that she will be in the home with your parent as frequently as you need her to be, and for as long as you need her to be. For many seniors, this means having a care provider in the home for a few hours of the day or even just a few hours on a couple of days out of the week. For others, the need is more extensive and they will need a care provider who is the home all day and then another who is aware and alert in the home all night.

What if your parent's needs fall somewhere in between? If you know that your parent needs assistance and care during the day and may benefit from having someone in the home at night, live-in care might be the ideal option.

Despite what it sounds like, a live-in caregiver does not actually move in to your parent's home full time. Instead, this type of care arrangement involves two or three care providers who work with your parent in rotation. Her primary care provider will be in the home with her 24 hours a day for three or four days out of the week. She will care for your parent during the day and then go to sleep at night in your parent's home. When her shifts are over, she will switch with another care provider who will stay in the home for a day or two. If there is a third care provider she enables the primary care provider to take three days off and the secondary provider to be in the home only two nights, or can act as a backup provider in the event that one of the other care providers needs to take a day off.

With this type of care provider, your parent will have someone with her 24 hours a day. It is important to realize, however, that this does not mean that the care provider is on normal duty 24 hours a day. Instead, she will work a normal shift during the day and then have the expectation of a full night of sleep. She will also have personal time in the morning and evening to handle tasks such as showering and relaxing, as well as meal times throughout the day. If there is an emergency during the night, however, she is available to help address it promptly and effectively.

Some issues that may make it beneficial to have a live-in care provider include:
• Mild wandering tendencies
• Occasional falling out of the bed
• Recovering from an illness or medical procedure that might require extra help, but not every night
• Sundowners
