How Can You Manage Some of the Emotions You're Experiencing as a Caregiver?

One aspect of being a family caregiver that might surprise you is the gamut of emotions you'll encounter. Sometimes you'll even experience every single emotion every day. How you deal with those emotions can help you become a better caregiver.

Start Journaling Regularly

Journaling helps you to work through your emotions, even when you're not sure exactly what you're feeling. The key here is that you can't judge yourself for what you're writing or how you're feeling. If you're worried that someone else might read your journal, consider keeping it in a safe location to help you feel more secure.

Keep a Gratitude Log

Besides journaling, keeping a running log of everything that you're grateful for gives you something positive to focus on. This doesn't have to be difficult or time-consuming at all. Simply set aside a minute or two every day to write down one or two things you're grateful for that day. When you're having a difficult day down the road, go back over your gratitude log.

Avoid Stuffing Your Emotions

If you're ignoring your emotions and stuffing them to the side, you're not able to acknowledge them and to work through them. Then they stick around and just get bigger and bigger. What you have to do instead is to acknowledge what you're feeling and why you're feeling that way. Only then can you work through the emotion and get to the other side.

Keep up with Friends

Your friends can be an incredible support system for you. Take the time to reach out to them, even when it feels a little difficult for you. You don't have to have long conversations, but simply reaching out can help to keep you connected.

Talk to a Professional

If you're having a lot of trouble dealing with your emotions as a caregiver, you might benefit quite a bit from talking to a therapist or counselor. They can help you to understand what you're feeling and why. They can also give you techniques that can help you to manage those feelings appropriately.

The more techniques that you have in your tool kit, the easier it will be to sort through some of your difficult emotions when they pop up.
