Why Is Caregiving So Stressful?

By Hilary and Greg Eldridge

Every caregiving experience is different, but they all have their fair share of stress. In some cases, you might even feel as if you get more than your fair share of stress. Understanding what’s behind those feelings can help you to put solutions in place that work for you and for your senior.

Doubts and Fears Build Up

There’s always something to second-guess yourself about when you’re a caregiver. No matter where your elderly family member is on the spectrum of needing help, you’re going to wonder whether you should have handled something differently or if there were something else you could have done. If you allow them to get to you, those doubts and those fears add up and they can stifle your decision-making process.

You and Your Senior Are Swapping Places

Role-swapping is an element of being a family caregiver, even if you don’t think that it is at first. Your elderly family member is used to being in charge and may be used to giving you some orders. To have that situation reversed can be odd for both of you, no matter how competent a caregiver you are. It’s important to leave those old roles behind and deal with the situation as it is right now.

It's Difficult to Keep in Touch

Caregiving can take a lot of your time and your energy. What that usually means is that there are aspects of your life that fall by the wayside, like keeping in touch with friends and other people that you love. You may not have the time that you would like to connect in the ways that you used to in the past, but it’s important to reach out in the ways that you can do so now.

You Also Don’t Have Time Just for You

It’s no surprise that you don’t have a lot of time for other people when you start to realize that you don’t have a lot of time just for you, either. Having time to devote to just your wants and needs is more crucial than a lot of people realize. If you’re an introvert, it’s even more important for you to have some time that is just for you.

No matter how much you want to avoid being overly stressed as a caregiver you’re going to experience some that you don’t expect. It’s how you handle that stress that really matters in the long run. Take the time to assess how you’re handling your duties as a caregiver and whether there is anything that could make the job easier on you.
