Four Ways to Add Stress-relief to Your Day

Stress is just a part of life to a certain extent, but the more you add to your plate the more stress you’re going to encounter. Caregiving is one of the most stressful things you can do, so you have to have some strategies in your toolkit to deal with that stress.

Check in with Yourself

When you’re really busy, you’re not paying attention to what your body is telling you. Take some time early in the day to close your eyes and to get in tune with yourself. Mentally go through every part of your body and pay attention to small details. Look for things like pain, muscle tightness, or breathing difficulties. Are you experiencing headaches or digestive issues? Really catalog what your body is communicating. If there’s anything that needs greater attention, it might be time for a doctor’s appointment.

Give Meditating a Try

Meditation is intimidating for a lot of people. You don’t have to meditate by the book in order to get some serious benefits from it. Take a little bit of time and just close your eyes and breathe. If you start to try to solve problems or find yourself thinking about anything, go back to focusing on your breathing. Start out trying this just a couple of minutes at a time and gradually increase the amount of time you spend.

Practice Deepening Your Breathing

Breathing can tell you a lot about how you’re feeling. When you’re feeling stress significantly, your breathing is likely to be shallow and fast. It can take some practice deepening your breathing again. There are a few benefits to this. First, when you’re concentrating on deeper breathing, you’re going to get more oxygen into your body. Second, deepening your breathing will signal to your body and to your brain that everything is okay, which can calm down some of the stress hormones that your body produces.

Reach out for Help

Caregiving is not something that you have to go through alone. Find some help, especially from professional elderly care providers. They can make every aspect of caregiving much easier on you, which is going to dramatically decrease the stress you encounter every day. Learn to rely on their help, especially when you’re not feeling so great.

Being a caregiver means that you need to become adept at learning how to manage stress. In and amongst the other skills you pick up during your time as a caregiver, stress relief techniques will continue to serve you well for the rest of your days.
