PCA Training Program at Home Helpers

HAGAMAN — The training that leads to personal care aide certification will soon be available in Hagaman for those seeking a new career and those already working within the home health care field. In October 2018, Home Helpers of Amsterdam’s Licensed Home Care Services Agency program was granted an approval by the New York State Department of Health to operate a PCA training program on site, according to a news release.

“This training program will help ensure seniors and others in our community who rely on Personal Care Aides receive quality care,” said Ramon Rodriguez, chief executive officer of Home Helpers of Amsterdam. “At the same time, we’re providing a valuable opportunity for those interested in a career in the expanding home health care field.”

The training will utilize both a classroom and clinical lab setting and will be coordinated and taught by Home Helpers’ registered nurse staff. The 40-hour curriculum includes classroom training, demonstration, hands-on learning and a written exam. The training takes place over nine days. There is no cost to complete the training program, but applicants are required to meet admission criteria to attend.

Upon successful completion of this course, trainees receive a NYSDOH Certificate as a personal care aide. Positions are available for certified PCAs at Home Helpers of Amsterdam after course completion. Home Helpers provides their certified PCA employees with support and additional training annually and on an as-needed basis.
