What Are You Worried about in Terms of Aging in Place?

By Mike Jackson

There's so much about aging in place that is scary for you as your senior's caregiver. You want her to be happy, but you also very much want her to be safe. Elder care providers can be the bridge that helps both of you to feel more comfortable.

How Your Senior Will Get Around

Transportation can be a huge concern for both you and your aging family member. While there may be public transportation options available, you might feel more comfortable to have elder care providers doing the driving. They're right there with your aging family member and can make sure that she's alright while she's out and ensure she gets home safely.

Whether She's Talking to Other People

Very often aging adults can get into a routine where they don't see very many people on a daily basis. Soon enough, one day on her own can turn into two and then a week. When you know that elderly care providers are stopping by and checking on her, her risk of isolating is a lot lower. Home care providers can also help with transportation to events and activities where your senior can interact with lots of other people, further helping her to avoid isolating.

What and When She's Eating

Food is fuel and if your elderly family member is expending more effort than she wants to in order just to eat, she's likely to rely on less healthy food choices. Pre-packaged meals and fast food are convenient, but they often don't give your elderly family member the fuel that she really needs. With help from senior care providers, your family member can eat fresh foods that someone else cooks for her. That makes a huge difference.

If She's Truly Safe

You might find yourself wondering how safe your elderly family member truly is at home. Senior care providers have a lot of experience in noticing quickly what is a safety hazard for your aging adult. They can help you to pinpoint what needs to change in order for your elderly family member to be much safer at home, both alone and with help available.

All of these situations are important and by sitting down with your elderly family member and creating a care plan you can do quite a bit more than you think you can about helping to avoid problems. If you're trying to do it completely alone, though, you might find yourself overwhelmed.
