Should Your Aging Adult Start Lifting Weights?

Strength training, or lifting weights, might not be something your senior has considered before, but it can be a powerful tool for her now. Lifting even small weights or using resistance bands can change your senior's entire life.

Get a Bone Density Test

As your elderly family member ages, she may start to lose bone mass. If she hasn't been engaging in other types of exercise, she may also be losing muscle mass and have poor balance. Having a bone density test done enables your senior and her doctor to get a baseline idea of where she stands right now. If there are other treatments that might help, her doctor can give you a full plan to follow.

Investigate Different Types of Strength Training

Taking up strength training doesn't necessarily mean that your senior is going to start hanging out with body builders. There are a variety of different strength training that might fit your senior's ability levels and interest. Free weights, hand weights, and even canned goods can all make excellent tools for strength training. Resistance bands are another easy way for your senior to build her strength.

What Can it Do for Her?

The two biggest benefits from strength training are that it can slow down or reverse muscle loss and it can help your senior to strengthen her bones. Combined with other types of exercise, including balance exercises and cardio, your senior might start to see all sorts of benefits that help her to improve her overall mobility. If she needs help from you and senior care providers for mobility now, a few months of strength training can help her to gain strength and balance that she desperately needs.

Find Some Motivation for Your Senior

Finding motivation for strength training exercises can be tough for your aging adult, even if she suspects it could be beneficial for her. Sit down with your elderly family member and brainstorm a list of reasons that she might want to follow through with strength training. Her list might include maintaining her independence, improving her bone health to stop taking medications, or even simply becoming stronger.

Once your senior starts to see some results from strength training, she may start to really enjoy it. lifting weights with friends and family members can help her to enjoy it even more.
