5 Reasons Why Your Aging Loved One Needs Night Care

By Mike Jackson

Elderly adults are more likely to need in-home care after a serious medical issue, surgery, chronic disease or age-related disability. If they are still able to live at home, but just need daily assistance, many family caregivers hire home care providers to be with their loved ones when they cannot. These home care providers come in and do all kinds of services for the senior, such as housekeeping, laundry and meal preparation.

But what about the elderly person at night? All too often, family caregivers focus on getting home care providers for the day, but overlook their aging loved one’s needs throughout the night. Here are 5 reasons why your aging loved one needs night care.

1. Security and Safety

Many elderly adults don’t feel safe or secure when they are alone at night. Not only are they physically weakened from age and chronic issues, but they often become a target for observant thieves who know that a senior’s home is an attractive target. Having a home care provider present throughout the night means that the elderly person can feel more at ease and the increased activity at the house is a deterrent to criminals.

2. Physical Needs

When elderly adults are affected by health issues that prevent them from getting around well, it can have a serious effect on their quality of life. Conditions like arthritis, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and osteoporosis can make it difficult for seniors to even get in and out of bed on their own. In the night, they may need to use the bathroom, get a drink or take some medicine. Having a home care provider nearby to help them get what they need and avoid moving around a dark house is important for their health and wellness.

3. Mental Health Needs

One of the effects of conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and dementia is that there are times when the elderly adult becomes disoriented and needs someone to help them stay safe. Sometimes during a disoriented episode, the elderly person may try to wander. Disorientation is very common in the middle of the night when the senior awakes. If an elderly adult has some memory-related condition, the presence of a home care provider can keep them safe.

4. Emergencies

It’s common for elderly adults to experience emergencies in the middle of the night, and if they are alone it can be very scary if they cannot get the help they need. One of the most common things is a slip and fall accident. Other possibilities include sudden health scares like a stroke, heart attack or asthma attack. Home care providers can help them stay calm and call emergency medical personnel in time.

5. Relieve Family Caregivers

It’s a big responsibility taking on the care of an aging relative and family caregivers are often stressed about trying to get everything done. Hiring home care providers to take care of their aging relative at night means they can get a good night’s sleep and not worry about their loved one.
