Silent Strong Dad
He never looks for praises
He's never one to boast
He just goes on quietly working
For those he loves the most
His dreams are seldom spoken
His wants are very few
And most of the time his worries
Will go unspoken too
He's there.... A firm foundation
Through all our storms of life
A sturdy hand to hold to
In times of stress and strife
A true friend we can turn to
When times are good or bad
One of our greatest blessings,
The man that we call Dad.
- Karen K. Boyer
Today at Home Helpers we honor all fathers in our community and beyond, wishing them all a Happy Father's Day. The poem above reminds me of my own father with whom I will be spending this afternoon with. I am so thankful that I am able to spend time with him today. I was looking through some old pictures this morning and found the picture below of my dad, my sister and I on a trip to Weeki Wachee Springs many many many years ago...
Father’s Day means different things to different people. For me, it's being able to spend some time with my father who's been the greatest role model for me in my life. It would be impossible to count the many things he has taught me, all of the advice he has given, and all of the support he has given me even during the toughest times. To this day, I still reach out to him on a regular basis for great advice and feel fortunate to still have him in my life. I love you, dad.
Many are like me and spending time with their father today. For others, Father's Day could be spending some time with their father on the phone because they were unable to travel to where he is for the weekend. For others, today could be a day of remembering cherished memories. For others, today could be almost like any other day, where they have taken upon themselves caregiving responsibilities for their father that have slowly but surely escalated.
Whatever your situation, Fathers Day marks a special opportunity to honor fathers everywhere and to say "I love you" and "thank you" for all they've done for us. I encourage you all to take some time today to be thankful for the moments and the opportunities you have to share with your loved ones. Do this today and everyday. In the end, these moments together are all we have.
