September Is National Senior Center Month

By Jonathan Marsh, Owner

Hi, Fellow Community Members!

What do you think of when you hear the phrase “senior center”? If the image in your mind is people sitting around, almost ready for a nap, then think again. Senior centers are a lot more dynamic then that. With September as National Senior Center Month, it’s the perfect time to recognize all that senior centers have to offer.

Here’s just a partial list of all that senior centers around the U.S. can offer to members:

  • Education
  • Counseling
  • Support
  • Health and wellness seminars
  • Meals on Wheels and other similar programs
  • Field trips
  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Transportation help
  • Arts programs
  • Employment assistance
  • General community information

There are approximately 11,400 senior centers in the U.S. and they serve about a million adults each day, according to the National Council on Aging.

Senior centers offer a gateway of opportunities to older Americans, but that’s not the only benefit that they have. “Research shows that older adults who participate in senior center programs can learn to manage and delay the onset of chronic disease and experience measurable improvements in their physical, social, spiritual, emotional, mental, and economic well-being,” the National Council on Aging reports. They also give older Americans a central place to obtain a wealth of information and assistance.

Seventy-five percent of senior center users visit their senior center once to three times a week, with an average visit of 3.3 hours.

As you seek for active ways to engage the older adults in your life—or if you’re an older adult—consider your local senior centers as a destination. Find a list of just some of the senior centers in Florida at the link featured here.  You'll find in the list the Senior Enrichment Center at Renaissance on 9th in Bradenton, FL that I'll be blogging about later this month!

Yours truly,

Jonathan Marsh
