Community Spotlight: The EZ Lift Vest, created by Peggy Cauthen and Cathy Foster, makes transport of the mobility-challenged easier

If you’ve ever cared for someone with mobility issues, then you probably know the challenges involved with helping to move that person.

That’s the challenge that Peggy Cauthen of Lakewood Ranch and her sister, Cathy, faced as their mother got older. It became more difficult for their mom to get out of her chair, increasing her reliance on their help. Mobility assistive aids on the market weren’t enough to meet their needs.

Peggy Cauthen and Cathy Foster Owners & Registered Nurses

Peggy and Cathy, both registered nurses, were sitting at a kitchen table, discussing the challenges they faced in caring for their mom. After those talks—and inspiration from an answered prayer—the early idea for the EZ Lift Vest came to mind.

That was 5 years ago. Now, Peggy and her husband Willie Cauthen, along with Cathy and her husband Michael Foster, sell the EZ Lift Vest through their company JP Healthcare Solutions (named in honor of Peggy’s and Cathy’s mom, Julia Pearl) to customers all around the U.S. and Canada.

The EZ Lift Vest enables healthcare workers, caregivers, and family members help mobility-challenged patients and loved ones assist with standing, walking, and repositioning, minimizing the risk for unintentional falls and other potential injuries. The unisex vest itself is attractive, light weight, and is worn over regular clothing; in fact, it looks more like a typical article of clothing than a medical device and comes in sizes XX-small to 3XL. The vest can be adjusted to fit a variety of body types.

The vest has multiple hand-grip components to provide balance, control, leverage and the proper weight distribution to help lift and transfer a patient or loved one securely, comfortably and often with ease. “The hand grip components are comprised of heavy-duty webbing and circular stitching to ensure sturdiness and durability during maneuvers,” according to the company website. The EZ Lift Vest also has a convenient right front pocket for small items.

For the caregiver assisting a person wearing the EZ Lift Vest, the pressure of the lift is evenly distributed around the body and concentrated in the middle and upper back, providing complete back support during transfer maneuvers. This provides a secure lifting experience for the patient or loved one and promotes good body mechanics for the care giver, in essence, lowering the risk of injuries for both.

J.P. Healthcare Solutions sells the EZ Lift Vest to healthcare organizations, schools, governmental facilities, and individual families. The Cauthens and Fosters are proud to say that the EZ Lift Vest is made in the USA, at Dunn Manufacturing in Monroe, North Carolina. They chose Dunn after researching 25 potential manufacturers and making onsite visits to various companies.
