Hey, so I've got a challenge for you.

So as you may already know, we at Home Helpers kicked off our Send a Senior a Smile campaign on August 21st, which was National Senior Citizens Day. I'd like to tell you all about it and how you can get involved. Send a Senior a Smile. Let's go.

According to McKinsey and Company, Americans' happiness is at the lowest since World War II. This includes seniors. And as you can imagine, the mental health of seniors in our community and across America is probably at an all-time low. As a result of the pandemic, many seniors had to isolate from family members and friends for extended durations of time. Many continue to isolate, and really, it's so much deeper than that. Every senior and every person, in general, has their own unique story of how the pandemic has affected them.

To help improve the mental health of our seniors, we are challenging you to send a senior a smile. Wait, what's that you say? How do you get involved? Well, I'm glad you asked. All I'm asking that you do are simple intentional actions to bring smiles, positivity, and joy to seniors in your community wherever you are. Do something kind.

Some examples of ways you can get involved are: Take a senior to lunch. Here's a picture with me and my dad recently after I took him to lunch. You can also bring a senior lunch or dinner, maybe a senior who may have trouble leaving the home. You can also visit a senior who may be in a hospital or rehab facility. Read aloud to a senior. Take a senior to church. Bake cookies. Or simply give a senior a call just to check in to see how they're doing. Or I've always loved the idea of paying it forward and paying for lunch for someone behind you in the drive-through lane.

The possibilities are endless, and I would love to see what you come up with. There's also a benefit for you as scientific research shows that doing something kind for someone sends our neurotransmitters a rush of endorphins, leading to happiness for oneself as well. And remember, it doesn't have to be big. Just simple intentional actions to bring smiles to seniors.

If you like, you can share your action on social media and include the hashtag #SendaSenioraSmile to help us spread this idea. But it's okay if you don't because the main thing is the action itself.

So what are you waiting for? Go ahead, and Send a Senior a Smile. Take care and I'll see you soon.
