Senior Nutrition

Nutrition Needs Change as We Age

No matter our age, we’re all more aware of the impact proper nutrition makes in living a healthy life. But that doesn’t mean we always make the right choice when it comes to eating properly. And if we don’t eat properly in the early and middle stages of our life, then it’s almost guaranteed there will be health consequences later. The key is to not start bad habits or, if we’re already victim to them, to make a lifestyle change and develop new habits that help us live healthier and simply feel better.

But there are different challenges for older adults. First, they need fewer calories because they have a slower metabolism. Also, partly because of bad habits and different lifestyles earlier in life, many may now have a chronic condition, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease. That’s why it’s especially important to pay attention to what seniors eat. It can make a huge difference in keeping them healthy and feeling good.

If you’re concerned if Mom or Dad are eating properly, an Exceptional Caregiver from Home Helpers® Home Care can help provide peace of mind. They will work with the family and, if you want, your loved one’s doctor to make sure they’re getting the nutrition they need for a better quality of life. By helping with grocery shopping, meal preparation and even cleaning the cooking area, one of our Exceptional Caregivers will make sure your loved one is eating properly for their unique situation. For those times a Caregiver isn’t with your loved one, you can have delicious, chef prepared frozen meals from Silver Cuisine delivered right to your door to ensure they’re getting proper nutrition without having to cook and clean.

We are often amazed at how our Caregivers are able to gently persuade even the most stubborn person when it comes to making sure they are doing what’s best, whether it’s staying hydrated, getting up and moving or eating a piece of fruit instead of a piece of candy.
