High Blood Pressure

By Home Helpers Administrative Staff

What’s a vampire’s idea of fast food?  A guy with high blood pressure.  That’s a joke, but having high blood pressure is no laughing matter.  Hypertension, or high blood pressure is known as the “silent killer” because it can sometimes not show any symptoms at all.  As blood pumps through our bodies it places a level of pressure on the walls of our veins and arteries.  Blood pressure can damage your body over a period of time.  Hypertension affects 1 in every 5 adults and is one of the leading causes of death in adults over the age of 50.

Unlike most video games, when getting your blood pressure checked, it is not the goal to get the new “high score”.  A healthy normal blood pressure is 120/80 and anything higher is considered hypertension.  The lead causes of hypertension are family genetics, being overweight, smoking cigarettes, diabetes, high cholesterol, high salt diet, physical inactivity, and drinking alcohol.

How can you manage your high blood pressure?  Stop smoking today, maintain a healthy weight, avoid salt, eat a healthy diet-eat foods rich in potassium, exercise program recommended by a doctor, limit alcohol, manage stress, and regularly see a doctor and take medication as prescribed.  It is possible to live to a ripe old age with high blood pressure as long as you keep your levels down and take the precautions to stay healthy.
