The American Diabetes Association “Diabetes Alert Day,” is March 28, and knowing the statistics, I felt it was incredibly important to share information that can help you, or seniors in your everyday life, recognize the potential precursors of type 2 diabetes, or pre-diabetes conditions.
Type 2 diabetes is most commonly diagnosed in mature adults over the age of 50. According to a 2017 report summarizing data prepared by the Florida Diabetes Advisory Council, “It is estimated that in Florida, over 2.4 million people have diabetes and over 5.8 million have pre-diabetes.
“Over the past 20 years, the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes among Florida adults more than doubled, increasing from 5.2 percent in 1995, to 11.2 percent in 2014. (These stats are) of particular concern in Florida, which has the largest population of adults aged 65 and older in the nation.”
Diabetes occurs when the body cannot properly process glucose, or sugar, in the blood. Seniors with diabetes can function rather well without even knowing they are at risk for this ever-so-common disease.
Have you, or someone you love, been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes? If not, do you possess the risk factors for developing it? Diabetes doesn’t discriminate, and includes risk factors like age, gender, weight, heredity, chronic high blood pressure; and level of physical activity. Practically everyone is at risk.
