Importance of Caregivers for Senior Independence

By Debbie Humphrey

My family and I celebrated America’s birthday July 4th, more commonly known as “Independence Day,” by cooking-out and spending lots of pool and beach time with the grandchildren. We had a wonderful time together and enjoyed having the freedom to do so, thanks to our nation’s heroes who have fought selflessly to preserve and enhance the quality of our lives.

For seniors, there are few things more important than being able to live independently in their own homes, or maybe in an assisted living community, to embrace their retirement and golden years.

Senior independence is the primary hope and prayer for the majority of aging adults. However, illness, along with physical, mental and emotional limitations, can hinder that possibility. In these situations, a helping hand by a compassionate caregiver can make a huge difference when it comes to senior independence.

A perfectly matched caregiver can assist in numerous ways to keep your special senior someone happy, healthy, safe and independent:

Caregivers provide companionship to seniors, keeping them company when they are alone, keeping them engaged in meaningful conversations; making sure they stay involved in social activities; and monitoring activities of daily living.

Caregivers manage homemaker services like laundry, light housework, grocery shopping and meal preparation that may be too difficult for seniors to handle alone.

Caregivers assist with transportation when illness or disability prevents one from driving. Need a lift to the salon or doctor’s appointment? Seniors can remain independent without worrying how they will be able to manage personal errands, or missing important doctor appointments. Caregivers happily provide seniors with transportation assistance – whatever the need – promptly and safely, each and every time.

Caregivers provide respite care, so you can take the time you need for yourself and your family. They take their responsibilities very seriously when it comes to reminding seniors about taking medications; preparing meals & snacks; and assisting with personal care like bathing, dressing and more.

If you know a senior who struggles with activities of daily living, but who wants to remain independent in their own home, I am happy to offer a FREE in-home consultation to discuss their needs, and I will personally select the perfect, professional caregiver to assist them!
