Valentine’s Day is recognized and celebrated each February 14th, by young and old, alike. Children take colorful valentines to their classmates at school, and men scramble to find the perfect gift to show their significant other how much they are cherished. No matter what your age, you probably wear some red or pink item of clothing, share a few more smiles, and spread a little more love on a day set aside for just that…LOVE!
Being in the care-giving business, I’ve had the opportunity to meet hundreds of aging adults and all seem to have their own love stories to share. It’s really quite heart-warming to hear them, and it’s even more meaningful when spending time with seniors on Valentine’s Day!
A great number of seniors have lonely hearts. They’ve long lost the loves of their lives, and they may not be able to get out and about as they once could. Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to share some love and some time with a special senior someone in your life!
I’m proud that the caregivers with whom I work, take extra time to add some holiday spirit to the homes and lives of those in their charge. It’s not about spending money, it’s more about spending quality time with elders to make them feel like they are taking part in something as special as Valentine’s Day!
A few ideas to bring some love and light to seniors on Valentine’s Day include spending time with them, and listening to their own interesting love stories, watching old romantic movies, and reminiscing over old photos; delivering or sending a store-bought or homemade card, a bunch of colorful balloons, fragrant flowers, or a heart-shaped box of favorite candies, just to brighten their day. If you have time, baking a sweet treat, or preparing a meal to share is always a warm gesture that’s appreciated.
I’ve found Pinterest contains hundreds of suggestions for arts and crafts and other fun activities for seniors on Valentine’s Day. The point is, if there is a senior in your life, interaction with them on a day that can actually be more depressing when they’re alone, is a welcome gift that doesn’t have to cost anymore than a little of your time.
This Valentine’s Day, and throughout 2018, I encourage you and your family – especially younger generations – to spend quality time with special seniors in your lives, if only just to listen to them. They have lived, loved, and many times, lost so much, and we have the power to lift their spirits, and suppress a little loneliness on days like Valentine’s Day, that are meant to celebrate life and love! This small investment of time can prevent episodes of depression, which is often a precursor to a decline in mental, physical, and emotional health.
