I’ve been asked that question from time to time, and I can honestly say there are many reasons why being a caregiver to seniors is so rewarding.
Not only is it gratifying to help others who need assistance, but it truly makes a difference in their lives and adds to their quality of life. Often times, seniors who live alone become sedentary in their lifestyle and isolated from the outside world, which can lead to depression, despondence, and physical and mental decline.
You can probably picture in your mind what that looks like. Caregivers provide companionship and engage those in their charge, stimulating brain function, thoughts and memories.
Caregivers promote healthy living for seniors by preparing and sharing nutritious meals; ensuring medication reminders are given so proper doses of meds are taken when necessary; and encouraging physical activity (whenever possible), all of which are beneficial for the physical and mental well-being of the senior and the caregiver!
Caregiving is rewarding because it builds self-confidence. By performing different activities of daily living to assist someone who is unable to do so, instills a sense of self-worth and confidence in one’s abilities to perform these tasks.
It warms my heart to receive notes of thanks from family members who genuinely appreciate what our Home Helpers caregivers have done to enrich the lives of their loved ones. In the case of the state trooper who passed from a stroke less than two weeks after I started caring for him, his wife sent me a lovely thank you note expressing her gratitude “for making his last two weeks of life happy ones!”
Caregiving is not easy. It requires patience, understanding, compassion, and sometimes physical labor. Not everyone is cut-out to be a caregiver, but those who are blessed to possess compassionate hearts find it easy and rewarding to make an emotional investment when caring for others, and they find the work exceptionally rewarding. Caregivers will be the first to tell you what deep levels of satisfaction they feel when they know they’ve made someone else’s day brighter and healthier just by being there!
