Transportation Assistance for Seniors to Vote in Mid-Term Elections

By Debbie Humphrey

As the General Election draws near in Florida and across America, the airwaves are packed with political ads and the accompanying rhetoric intended to capture our attention and, most importantly, our votes.

Republican, Democrat and Independent candidates include capable men and women of various backgrounds, each with the ambition to serve in a political role as the best representative of their constituents…you and me.

It is troubling to see our country so divided between “right” and “left” party lines. However, these levels of discourse make it even more important for each of us to vote, regardless of personal political affiliation or candidate choice. American citizens should always take this responsibility very seriously and take time to cast their ballots.

The 19th amendment gave women the right to vote in 1920, and I will always remember growing-up, how important it was for my Mom and Grandmothers to visit their designated polling places to vote for the candidates they believed to be the best.

As I matured, I learned how important it was that I take my right to vote seriously, too. After all, whoever wins these races gains the huge responsibility of managing and creating policies and laws that directly affect our lives and the lives of our loved ones.

Seniors have lived through many elections, and most look forward to visiting their designated precincts and rejoice in having a voice through their vote. The challenge arises when aging adults can no longer drive themselves to their polling places, and seniors require safe transportation assistance to cast their all-important votes.

No matter who you like in the mid-term elections, it is your right as an American citizen to vote for whoever you choose. Every vote counts, so I encourage you and the seniors in your life to exercise this right before the polls close Tuesday, Nov 6th.
