Integrity Matters When Searching for In-Home Care for Seniors

By Debbie Humphrey

Integrity:  firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values: INCORRUPTIBILITY

 -Merriam-Webster Dictionary

You would not believe some of the stories I hear from those with whom I meet to discuss Home Helpers non-medical in-home care. One recent recount shared with me described this man’s father and a caregiver who persuaded him to take out a loan for her in the amount of $5000. It wasn’t until the man died that his son found out about the loan. The man’s father had been a very kind, generous soul, who did not see the harm in helping his caregiver. Appalling!!

Another story was about a caregiver who spent more time on her phone and iPad than she did actually caring for the elderly woman in her charge. Yet another, I saw as a random news story that touched me personally: my former Sunday school teacher, a woman in her 90’s, was robbed by her caregiver. The perpetrator took advantage of the old woman’s vulnerability by stealing, forging and cashing her checks. Fortunately, that thief ended up in jail.

Unfortunately, there are too many awful stories in the news where seniors are targeted and hurt in some way by those paid to take care of them.

Integrity is the cornerstone of our existence, and we do our very best to make sure incidents like those depicted above never happen. Home Helpers® provides non-medical in-home care for seniors, and we would not have survived for more than a decade if our integrity had been brought into question.

Of course, when dealing with people, life happens, and mistakes are made. We just strive to take extra precautions to prevent unfortunate occurrences. Background and drug screens are performed for each applicant; and I conduct extensive interviews before hiring anyone as a caregiver. They must demonstrate integrity before they are hired, certified, bonded and insured. Once a caregiver is certified, you can rest assured this person is highly qualified and excel in their field.

Trust and integrity are extremely important when it comes to hiring non-medical in-home care for seniors.  Egotism, inconsistency, defensiveness, finger-pointing and dishonesty should NEVER come into play. If that happens when you are consulting with potential caregivers, or once you’ve hired a caregiver, you should definitely examine their level of integrity.

As Wanda Thibodeaux copywriter for Inc. says, “Helping someone else become upright is, at the very core, arguably what integrity really is about.”

I am proud that my professional caregivers are Home Care Pulse Certified Providers™ (aka Certified – Trusted Providers), because they have been recognized among the most trusted in the industry, based on feedback from actual clients and family.

One satisfied family member gave us this 5-star Google Review:

"My mom used Home Helpers. They were on time and came every day. The caregivers were really good at everything. We had them for a couple of weeks. I would certainly recommend them. Both the office staff and the caregivers are great. They are extremely cooperative and there to help, especially Sean M and Mike H. Since choosing your agency, my life has been made a lot easier.”
