Fun Family Baking with Seniors Living Alone

Multi-tasking is a way of life for me. Between my professional responsibilities as a small business owner, and the amazing-but-hectic family life I share with my dear husband, children and grandchildren, I am constantly shifting gears and changing directions every single day.

That’s why when I realized I could recognize Great American Pies Month and National Bake for Family Fun Month in one fell swoop, I seized the opportunity!

My daughters and granddaughters are joining me for a fun day of baking next week to share in a family tradition I have cherished for years. I remember at the age of ten, standing on a small wooden stool at the kitchen counter as my grandmother would combine farm-fresh eggs and cream with sugar to make simple custard pies each day for the farm hands to enjoy on their meal breaks.

When in season, she would make scrumptious cobblers with fresh berries, peaches, or apples, served warm with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. Yum! These precious moments with my grandmother created amazing memories and instilled in me a genuine love for baking that I enjoy sharing with my own family to this day. Who knows? Maybe my granddaughters will remember our family fun while baking and recall our experiences fondly when they have children one day!

February is a wonderful month to show your love for seniors living alone by setting aside a little time to bake for family fun! Think of how it will lift their spirits and warm their soul as you fill your tummies with yummies you baked together! The process doesn’t take as long as you might think, and the results are simply scrumptious!

Your senior loved one will definitely feel and taste the love when you work together to bake this easy fruit cobbler, compliments of Grandma B. [I am including measurements, even though she never used measuring utensils.]

Easy Fruit Cobbler

 Ingredients

1 Stick butter or margarine, melted

1 Cup Sugar

1 Cup All-Purpose Flour

1 Cup of Milk

2 cups of fruit:  Berries, Cherries, Peaches, or Apples

Directions

Melt the butter in a large iron skillet, or melt and pour in 9” x 13” baking dish.

Mix the next three ingredients and pour batter on top of melted butter.

Add the fruit on top of the batter.

Bake at 350° for 40-45 minutes.

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped topping.

Of course, you will want to take dietary restrictions into consideration. For example, you may need to research the proper conversions and choose a sugar substitute if Diabetes is a concern. Be very careful, though, because sugar substitutes are substantially sweeter than regular granulated sugar, and there are usually specific instructions when baking with them.

Even if you don’t bake, pick up a pie at Publix, warm it in the oven and warm the heart of a senior loved one simply by spending a little quality time with them!
