Activities are Beneficial for Seniors’ Physical & Mental Well-Being

After lots of serious info about Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Brown Bag Check-ups, and scary senior scams, I wanted to lighten the mood and present something fun for the caregivers I employ and the clients in their charge.

A Pumpkin Decorating Contest is underway at Home Helpers Clearwater! Our staff is providing a variety of supplies to our caregivers, along with plastic pumpkins, to create Halloween masterpieces that could win caregiver-client teams fabulous prizes!

Everyone is encouraged to decorate a pumpkin with their client. If there is more than one caregiver per client, each caregiver can decorate one with their client.

Here are the rules:

  • Caregivers pick up their supplies the week of 10/18.
  • Home Helpers will provide an artificial pumpkin, paint, paint brushes and Halloween stickers (no knives or cutting is allowed). Safety is our first priority!
  • Teams will decorate their “pumpkin masterpiece” and take a picture to enter the contest. Each team must return their picture by Wed 10/28, to eligible to win.
  • Winning caregiver- client teams will receive a “fabulous prize!”
  • Above all, have fun and be creative!

Now, this may sound like a crafting activity for children, but it is so important that Home Helpers caregivers enthusiastically engage with their clients and participate in fun activities at Halloween and all year-round. Activities of almost any kind are beneficial for seniors’ physical and mental well-being.

I know from experience that loneliness and social isolation often result in fear, anxiety and depression among seniors. This not only impacts their mental health, but also their physiological health. Furthermore, it can cause unnecessary worry and stress for family members and friends.

Mental, physical and social inactivity often contributes to mental and physical maladies that include depression, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, hypertension and premature death. However these scenarios can be avoided with reasonable amounts of activity.

The benefits seniors experience from being more active include improved physical health, stamina, concentration, learning, and moods, all of which contribute to a happier, more satisfying life.

Maybe pumpkin decorating isn’t for you or your senior loved one, but there are plenty of stimulating activities that could prove beneficial, like card or board games, a walk in the park, people-watching at the mall, or a nice, scenic drive along the coast.

If you or a special senior someone you know lives alone and would benefit from more engagement and activity, I invite you to explore Home Helpers® and our in-home care options.
