"How do we make a difference?"

By Peter McIndoe

"How do you make a difference?"

This is a common question most everyone hears at least once in their life. For a long time, I've answered it with something related to engineering, marketing, or ministry. In the past year though, I've responded differently. I work in the world of Elder Care, owning and managing a franchise called Home Helpers that serves the people of Conway, Cabot, Jacksonville, Little Rock, and surrounding areas.  The next question that follows is usually something along the lines of, "How did you get into that business?" So in this first blog post, I'll tell you what I tell them.

My wife, Debra, and I moved to Arkansas 5 years ago to work in a para-church ministry called FamilyLifeâ that helps strengthen marriages and families. We fell in love with Arkansas, the people here, and the state’s natural beauty. As the years passed, and we settled into life here, we found ourselves in more and more conversations about the desire to one day own a business. We wanted to help people, and work together on something that we were both passionate about. My wife has a Masters degree in Nursing and has been involved in the medical community for years. More recently, she has been teaching nursing at Baptist Health College of Nursing in Little Rock. As an RN, she has been able to use her gifts to help the disabled, aging, and hurting in the hospital and respite care community. Something that she always has been especially wonderful at though, was connecting and caring for the senior patients that she would come across. Debra and I have both always loved the generation above us, which we consider to be arguably the greatest generation. My grandfather was and continues to be one of the most influential people in my life. He took me fishing and spoke with me about integrity, making a contribution with my life and doing the right thing. My wife had a similar experience with her Aunt “Lib”, so much so that we named our first child after her -Olivia. We took all of this into consideration when finally deciding to pursue the ownership of our own business. Deb's medical experience, my business experience, our love and deep respect for the the generation above us, and both of our desire to make a difference led us straight to to owning an in-home senior care business.

We began to research franchises within this field, we were looking for something that had a stellar reputation, an impressive operating system and a great record. We found all of this and more with Home Helpers. As we began looking more into this franchise, we became more and more impressed in what we saw. Home Helpers has a 19 year pedigree, an optimized operating system designed to provide the very best care, and a team that truly cares about what we do. Then we met a local Home Helpers franchisee couple named Sam & Holly Sellers- who have been running a successful enterprise for 9 years and have an astounding A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. We jumped on board with Home Helpers about a year ago and operate in the territory adjoining Sam’s – Conway, Cabot, North Little Rock, Jacksonville, Ward and Beebe. Sam welcomed us to the Home Helpers family with open arms- we share an office, office staff and a great team of Caregivers. They have come alongside us to serve the people of Central Arkansas with the best In-Home Elder Care possible.

In regards to caring for the elderly, we believe that person-to-person relationships are the most important part of any Home Care business. With this in mind, we utilize Home Helpers’ extensive hiring process, recruiting the best and most qualified Caregivers we can find. So far, the journey has been a wonderful experience, and we work every day to make sure that our services are of the highest possible quality to serve the elder community of Central Arkansas with excellence.
