Somers Fire Department Installs Free Smoke Detectors

By Peter DiMaria

Winter tips for In-Home Care Somers CT

Good news Somers seniors who live alone, their families and their caregivers. The town's Fire Department teamed up with the American Red Cross and Kidde Fire alarms to install free battery operated smoke detectors for Somers residents.

Now that the winter is coming and freezing temperatures are already around, we face increased fire risk with the use of fireplaces and space heaters. If you and your loved one don't have a smoke alarm, just give a call to the Somers FD and they will go to your residence and install one for free.

Over 10 of Somers inhabitants are 65 years of age or older, according to the Census Bureau. 8.4% of the town's households have someone who lives alone and is 65 or older.

If you are interested, call Somers FD during the week at 860-749-7626. The smoke detectors will be installed on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last

Aditional protection

If you are considering additional protection for your loved one, you should consider installing a carbon monoxide gas detector as well.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is colorless, odorless and it can be deadly.  According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), carbon monoxide can build up indoors and poison people and animals, when you burn fuel in cars or trucks, small engines, stoves, lanterns, grills, fireplaces, gas ranges, or furnaces.

CO poisoning takes up to 40,000 people to hospital emergency departments per year and causes 5000 to 6000 yearly deaths in the US.

Senior Care for the Elderly in Their Own Homes in Somers: Electronic Monitors

If your loved one lives alone, also consider renting electronic monitors, offered by Home Helpers/Direct Link, as another layer of protection to give you peace of mind. These will send an alert to a monitoring station, in case smoke or carbon dioxide reach high concentrations in your home or your loved one's residence. The monitoring center then immediately calls a family member or 911, to send help.
