Suffield’s Emergency Aid Association Helps Seniors to Age at Home

Senior Care in Suffield CT

Home Care Suffield CT needs: 11.6% of the town residences have someone living alone who is 65 or older

For the city of Suffield, CT, it is essential to maintain its senior citizens at home, healthy and independent. For this reason, the town's Emergency Aid Association (EAA) Outreach Program provides free of charge social work services to senior and disabled residents. The objective of the program is to explore different alternatives available for elder citizens, to enable them to stay in their own homes, for as long as possible.

Suffield demographic data reinforces the importance of the program. According to the Census Bureau, 14.1% of Suffield residents is 65 years of age or older, and 11.6% of the town residences have someone living alone who is 65 or older.

As part of the program, EEA Outreach Social Workers conduct social, physical and financial assessments, make referrals, assist with applications and advocate for residents in need of support services.

When someone contacts the program, EEA schedules a meeting of the resident (and or their family) with the social workers. These sessions can be held either at the Association’s office or in their home. A telephone consultation may also be considered.

The social workers explain details and benefits of state, federal and local programs and services eligible for seniors and persons with disabilities. Then, they will be able to connect older residents in need with service providers to solve issues related to housing, health, nutrition, home care, transportation, socialization, finances, and insurance, among others.

Suffield CT caregivers: Home Care out of town

Suffield residents responsible for the home care of a family member in another town are also eligible to access the information and referral services offered by the program.

When aging at home independently is not possible anymore, the EEA will also work with the families to consider other alternatives.

The Emergency Aid Association staff works closely with family members and caregivers, Suffield PD, the Health Department, the Housing Authority, several Town departments, and federal, state and community agencies.

Besides the Outreach Program, the EAA provides diverse social services and supportive health promotion programs to Suffield residents, many of them relevant for older residents.

Among these services, it compiles and updates regularly a list of residents in the community who would benefit from a check-up call during a town or state-wide emergency, for example, people who use oxygen or need electricity for medical equipment.
