Senior Care in Helena MT: 5 Mistakes You Can Make When You're Really Stressed

By Michael Hagman, RN, BSN

Family Caregivers in Helena, MT Can Get Stressed Out!

Stress can do some really terrible things to you, but one of the worst is that it can cause you to make mistakes in your daily life. Take a look at some of these mistakes and see if you're possibly making some of them.

Overlooking Important Information

been there before. You've got multiple different people or tasks vying for your attention and you overlook something really important that makes everything worse. Maybe it's the fact that the dog knocked something over or that your loved one is trying to tell you about her doctor's appointment. Whatever it is, the stress is running the show, you aren't.

Yelling When You Don't Mean To

When you're super stressed, it's unbelievably easy to take it out on the people around you, especially when they're not even part of why you're stressed. As a result, it's easy to say things that you don't mean or worse, to say them at a volume you didn't mean to hit. Yelling doesn't relieve the stress for you, it just puts everyone else around you into a more stressed out state.

Procrastinating Important Stuff

Stress also makes it really easy to put off dealing with the tasks you don't want to deal with right now. You can worry and fret about them until the deadline is right there, under your nose, but that just keeps you in that amped up, stressed out frame of mind. Even worse than procrastinating, though, is when you simply don't even remember that there was a deadline in the first place.

Neglecting Yourself

When you're under a lot of stress, the last person on your list is almost always yourself. As a result, you don't sleep as well as you should, you likely don't eat right, and exercise isn't something you're focused on. Paying more attention to your own needs can help you to get rid of the stress that's plaguing you. If necessary, enlist the help of your loved one's elderly care providers in order to get some space and time for yourself.

Making Bad Decisions

Stress makes you more preoccupied than you would be normally, and that means that you might not go through the same decision-making process that you would if you weren't so stressed. The result? Bad decisions that may lock you into situations you really don't want in the first place. If you're stressed, put off decisions until you can think them through carefully.

If you need help getting rid of your own stress, take the time to talk to your doctor or to a counselor who can make it easier.
