Could Bedroom Mobility Tools Help Your Elderly Loved One Feel More Independent?

ChairWhen you're taking care of your elderly loved one, one of her chief concerns can be keeping herself as independent as she can for as long as she can. Some of these bedroom tools can make all the difference for your loved one.

Bed Rails and Poles

Bed rails and poles can help your loved one to get out of bed safely. Rails can either attach to the bed frame itself or use a platform system to slip between the mattress and the bed springs. Poles are less intrusive on the bed itself and typically mount to both the floor and the ceiling to provide a stable option for your loved one.

Bed Shakers and Alarms

Getting out of bed is one thing, but waking up can be another entirely. If your loved one has hearing issues, normal alarms may not be enough for her. Alarm clocks that attach to bed shakers or even to a bedside lamp alert your loved one in ways other than her hearing that it's a specific time. You can also find similar devices to connect to the telephone and to the front doorbell so that your loved one has access to that information from her bedroom, too.

Bedside Toilets and Urinals

Needing the facilities in the middle of the night can be complicated for an elderly loved one who has mobility issues. By the time she wakes up and realizes that she needs the bathroom, your loved one may find it difficult to get there in time. Having options available at her bedside, such as urinals and bedside toilets, make that problem much less of an embarrassing issue for your loved one.

Bedside Caddies and Pouches

Your loved one may have a bedside table, but sometimes even that is too far away for the really important items or your loved one needs to have them right there with her. This is when bedside caddies and pouches can come in handy. Some fit right over the headboard while others can slide in between the mattress and the box spring.

Helping your elderly loved one stay safe in her bedroom can be a matter of employing some simple tools. If she still needs extra help, consider hiring elderly care providers who have experience with helping elderly loved ones get into and out of bed safely.
