How to Eat Better as a Family Caregiver

Assess Your Diet

Before you start making changes, it's time to get a deeper look at your current eating habits. Are you relying on junk food or processed foods quite a bit? You might also be eating foods that fall under the category of "comfort foods" rather than foods that have higher nutritional values. Look also at when you're choosing certain foods. If you're putting off eating until you're completely famished, for example, you're more likely to make hasty choices about your food that maybe aren't so great.

Use Shortcuts for Healthier Options

Time is a big concern for family caregivers, and with good reason. You often have limited time so shortcuts like junk food or microwave meals tie into that need. One way around this is to lean on shortcuts that aren't unhealthy. When you prep vegetables, prep a few more than you need right then. When you're ready for a quick meal, you're a few steps ahead already. Another shortcut is to choose simple meals that don't require a lot of time or prep work.

Make More Food When You Do Cook

When you do actually cook, make more than you're going to eat right then. Some people don't like leftovers all that much, but if you freeze them right away, you have a home-cooked meal that won't taste like leftovers. Store your extra meals in single-serving containers. Then, when you need something really fast, you can microwave it just like you would a processed boxed meal.

Talk to a Nutritionist

Food combinations can make a big difference, too. When you understand how proteins and carbohydrates work together to fuel your body and deliver nutrients, you can make better choices more often. Talk to a nutritionist or a dietician about what you can do to make your meals healthier. They can give you recipes and advice that can make eating healthier so much more simple than you realize.
