5 Myths About Seniors and Exercising

Many older adults become less active as they get older because they become increasingly tired or have more mobility issues than they did in the past. What these elders do not know is daily exercise can actually help with these problems. Moderate exercise can help keep the senior's body working correctly, boost their energy, and give them a stronger, healthier body.

Even with all of the benefits physical activities have to offer, some elders are reluctant to do them. Here are five myths to exercising that have been debunked. As long as their doctor approves it, there is no reason your aging parent should not participate in exercises. They may also need a little extra support to get moving, so consider hiring a home care provider to keep them company and help encourage them to stay active.

5 Exercising Myths for Elders

  1. Disabled seniors think they can’t exercise sitting down. There are a number of exercises available for seniors to do while sitting down, especially if they are wheelchair bound. Some exercises that can be down will sitting include lifting weights and some aerobic exercises.
  2. Older adults think they are too old to workout. This statement is completely false. There is no age limit to exercising. Even if your loved one has not exercised a day in their life, they are never too old to start. Gentle exercises are a great place to start to help build up their fitness. One example of a gentle exercise is walking and yoga.
  3. Seniors should be resting instead of exercising. This could not be further from the truth. By participating in physical activities, older adults can improve their mental alertness, as well as reducing their mobility issues and trips to the doctor.
  4. Elderly adults might fall down and hurt themselves if they exercise. Falling is a serious problem among older adults, but exercising can actually lower their chances of falling. This is because they will build strength, coordination, stamina, flexibility, and bone mass.
  5. Many elders think they are too old to start working out, so why start now. Exercising has the amazing power of making older adults feel and look younger, while also allowing them to live a longer, more independent lifestyle than they would if they were sedentary.

Exercising can be tough at first, especially for older adults with physical ailments. But the more they try to work out, the better they will feel in the long run. Keep in mind that you should get their doctor’s approval before beginning an exercise program in order to make sure it is safe for them to do.
