Every year, the last Saturday in September is observed as Family Health and Fitness Day USA. This holiday was created to encourage families all across the United States to have a more active lifestyle for the sake of health and fitness. Family Health and Fitness Day USA is a wonderful holiday for seniors, caregivers, and all members of the family to celebrate. Not only is participating in active activities healthy, it can also be a fun way for family members to connect and spend quality time together. If you and your senior loved one wish to celebrate Family Health and Fitness Day USA this year, read on for a few fun ideas!

Outing at the Park

Spending a day at the park in the early fall is a wonderful activity that people of all ages can enjoy. Children can stay active by playing at the playground and family members of all ages can enjoy hiking on nature trails and observing the beautiful fall colors. Your local park may also have other opportunities to be active such as bike or boat rental or a swimming beach. Remember to pack a healthy picnic lunch filled with fruits and veggies, as well!

Sport Challenge

Host a friendly tournament with your family give everyone the opportunity to play. There are many great active games that you can play in your loved one’s own backyard that can be entertaining as well as a good work out. Some examples include badminton, table tennis, lawn darts, croquet, or bocce.

Family Bike Ride

A family bike ride can be especially fun if your loved one has cycling trails near where they live. Invite the whole family for a ride and enjoy the sights and sounds of your town as you get a great workout in, as well. If everyone has a great time, don’t be surprised if this family bike ride becomes a tradition! Remember, everyone of any age should always wear a helmet while biking.

Attend an Official Community Event

Check online to see if there is a Family Health and Fitness Day USA official event taking place in your community this year. Many cities and towns will host events such as community walks, health fairs, and other non-competitive sports events that will take place in parks, malls, and recreation centers. These events can be fun and healthy social events for seniors to take part in.
