How to Use Exercise to Deal with Stress

When you're trying to get rid of some of your stress, you might want to turn to activities that can help you in other ways, too. One such activity is exercise. Exercising is a great way to bust stress and it's great for your heart and your brain.

Start Small and Work Your Way Up

If you're not used to exercising, you really need to start out small and work your way up to a more complicated exercise plan. Start with a trip to your doctor to ensure that you're healthy enough to begin a new exercise plan. You don't want to injure yourself or cause damage that you could have prevented. In the beginning, even short bursts of activity can do you a world of good.

Give Yourself Plenty of Breaks

When you're first starting out, you'll need plenty of breaks. Don't beat yourself up about this because you're building your stamina as you go. Eventually you'll be able to do far more complicated exercises for a longer period of time. In the meantime, rest when your body tells you that you need rest so that you don't run the risk of overdoing it.

Try Some Activities You Might Not Think of as Exercise

Exercise doesn't have to be boring or traditional in order to be effective, especially for stress relief. Here are some ideas of exercises to try:

  • Have an impromptu dance party
  • Walk a pet
  • Ride a bike to the store
  • Use the stairs
  • Park farther away
  • Walk around the neighborhood
  • Play a game with kids or pets

If you don't like the idea of non-traditional exercises, then consider some of the more typical exercises:

  • Yoga
  • Aerobics
  • Running
  • Swimming
  • Power walking

Don't forget that you can also mix and match these activities to find the ones that work the best for you.

Make Time for Yourself

The big key to using exercise as stress relief is to make it a regular habit. In order to do that, you have to give yourself permission to have this time. This could mean enlisting other family members to stay with your loved one, exercising with your loved one, or even hiring home care providers to stay with your loved one. Regardless, you have to be serious about allowing yourself this time.
