Do You Need a New Vehicle?

When you first started being a family caregiver, your existing vehicle probably worked well for the situation you had at that time. As your caregiving needs change, though, so too do your requirements in a vehicle. Here are some things for you to consider for your next vehicle.

There's Enough Room for People

Caring for elderly loved ones, kids, and pets can mean that you need to have room for plenty of people in your vehicle. Look at whether or not your current vehicle can hold as many people as you routinely need it to hold. Extra space that you can access by folding seats or moving them can come in handy. You may not need a minivan or an SUV, but it's possible that you still need flexible seating options in the vehicle you choose.

There's Enough Room for Stuff the People Need

If your elderly loved one uses a walker, for example, you may need more room to store it during errands or when you take her to her appointments. Some sedan trunks can accommodate larger items, but if you're carrying luggage or groceries, you may not have room for the walker, too. Again, a vehicle with flexible seating options often means that you can fold up that seating to make extra cargo space when you need it.

You've Got the Features You Need

Do you spend a lot of time in the car? If so, you may want a more advanced navigation system, hands-free operation, and built-in Bluetooth. That allows you to handle all the phone calls that you're likely juggling along with finding the directions for your next appointment or your loved one's next appointment. Another important factor is your current fuel usage. If your current vehicle isn't all that fuel friendly and you're spending a lot of time driving people around, your next vehicle needs to have excellent fuel mileage.

The Vehicle Is Customizable

In a more extreme situation, you might need a vehicle that you can customize more thoroughly. You might need a ramp or lift for a loved one in a wheelchair, for example, and some vehicles are easier to customize in this manner than others are. It pays to find a vehicle now that you can make those changes to later when you need them.

Finding the right vehicle can be challenging for a family caregiver, but it's definitely possible.
