Signs of Caregiver Burnout and Stress

Caring for an elderly loved one can take a toll on your own health and well-being. These feelings could be the result of the endless list of tasks and responsibilities you need to handle on a daily basis. There are over 15 million unpaid caregivers in the United States, many of whom have dealt with the same feelings of stress and burnout that you may be dealing with. To ease your burden and begin enjoying your job once again, let your doctor know as soon as possible if you have any of the following signs of burnout or stress.

Signs of Caregiver Burnout and Stress

  • Irregular sleep problems or not getting enough sleep
  • Lack of energy, exhaustion, or fatigue
  • Frequently feeling worried, anxious, angry, or irritable
  • Feeling depressed
  • Unusual weight gain or loss
  • Physical pain, like headaches or pain in the back
  • Feelings of resentment
  • Excessive eating, drinking, or smoking

If you begin to feel some of these mental and physical changes, it is important to discuss it with your doctor. The sooner you do so, the sooner you can get the treatment needed to continue caring for your elderly loved one.

Treating Caregiving Burnout and Stress

The answer to problems like this is not necessarily medication. There are more natural ways to relieve the emotional and physical aches and pains. Here are some tips to do just that.

  • Join a support group. Support groups are the perfect place to meet others who have experienced similar situations and feelings. These members can share advice on how they managed their burnout and stress, as well as tips on how to care for your loved one.
  • Meditate. Whether you only have five or fifteen minutes free, taking the time to meditate will help you relax. It will allow you to completely clear your mind of all anxious thoughts in order to feel renewed and ready to help the elder.
  • Use respite care. Respite care involves having professional caregivers take over for you, while you get a much-needed break from your caregiving responsibilities. During this break, you will finally get the chance to focus on yourself and your other responsibilities.
  • Stay healthy. A healthy diet and regular exercise will help you feel and look good. Try to amp up the amount of fruits and vegetables you eat in order to give your body the vitamins and minerals it needs.
