Deep breathing exercises are a fantastic way to learn how to relax yourself in a very short period of time. It can also help you to learn more about how you breathe and how you feel after getting more oxygen into your body.
The first step with any sort of breathing exercise is to make sure that you're comfortable. Later, when you're using the technique "in the wild," you won't be able to stretch out and get comfortable, but when you're learning, it's important. You'll want to be either seated or lying down in such a way that you can feel your chest and your stomach lifting as you breathe.
Start Breathing Regularly
Once you're comfortable, keep breathing normally and pay attention to how you're breathing. Most people have a rhythm to their breathing patterns and you can learn your own. As your breathing starts to deepen, your breathing should shift from your chest to your stomach. You'll know you're getting into true deep breathing when your chest barely moves and your stomach does most of the moving.
After a few deep breaths, start to forcefully exhale through your mouth. The purpose of this is to exhale as much air as you can in order to be able to bring in more air. As you breathe in and out, start counting silently as you breathe in and start over as you breathe out. Work on gradually increasing the counts on both the inhale and the exhale to help deepen your breathing.
Work Your Way up to Longer Sessions
When you first start learning how to do deep breathing exercises, you may only feel able to do it for a few minutes. As you become more accustomed to the exercises, you'll be able to do them for longer periods of time. There's no right or wrong length of time for you to spend during each session, so there's no need to rush yourself.
