When you understand your limitations as a caregiver, you can be more effective as a caregiver. The problem is that too often caregivers don't want to look at their weaknesses or limitations because they fear that makes them less capable as a caregiver. Take the time to really explore these different categories so you can get a fuller picture.
Look at Your Strengths
What is it that you do well when it comes to caregiving? Some people are awesome at research and asking doctors and other medical professionals the hard questions. Other people are gifted at keeping their elderly loved one's spirits up. Even if you think you don’t have any strengths when it comes to caregiving, you absolutely do.
Look at Your Weaknesses
As important as your strengths are, your weaknesses are just as important to understand. If you're not great at finding information that you need or researching, then having someone help you do that is a good idea. When you understand your weaknesses, you can compensate for them much more readily. It's never a bad thing to know your weaknesses.
Determine How Much Time You Have
Another factor in calculating your limitations is to look at how much time you have available in order to devote to caregiving. Having only a little bit of time to offer is certainly a limitation, but it's one that you can overcome. When you understand how time works against you, you're able to come up with a solution for that problem.
Add up Your Responsibilities
Odds are very good that caregiving is not your only responsibility, by far. When you look at all of the various responsibilities that fall to you alone, you can get a bigger picture of what your limitations are from that angle. Some responsibilities that call your name may be bigger and more involved than others, but that doesn't mean they don't make the list.
As you learn where your limitations lie, you can get help to cover your weaknesses. Talk to other family members and consider hiring home care providers. When you free yourself up, you can focus on your strengths in caregiving.
