Area Agency care coordinators assist adults ages 60 and over, develop services, advocate for the rights and needs of the older person, provide care coordination, personal emergency response systems, and respond to calls for community services and provide Medicare D, Advantage, and supplement counseling for any Medicare beneficiary. The Area Agency on Aging also provides assistance in the home for disabled or frail elderly persons who need help with daily living activities. Certified personal care assistants, under the supervision of a registered nurse, assist with bathing, grooming, meal preparation, and light housekeeping. The Agency also provides programs that will help fill the void for the elderly who do not qualify for services through Medicaid, VA or private insurance programs. This includes Private Pay In-Home services program for seniors who want to arrange and pay for a variety of tasks.

The Cancer Support Home (CSH) is a project of Washington Regional Medical Foundation, providing support services for cancer patients and their family members. Overnight lodging is available for cancer patients and their companions during treatment, a comprehensive breast health program including navigation, a full literature library, wig and mastectomy boutique, financial assistance, education, support groups and individualized counseling by licensed professionals. In addition to these services, CSH offers a variety of programs to aid in the journey like Clay for Cancer (art as therapy) and Empower U (exercise program). All CSH services are offered free of charge.

The UAMS/Schmieding Center is NWA’s only non-profit, regional center on aging. The Schmieding Center provides Aging Services and Resources Library – LMSW and Certified Dementia Practitioner is available to assist in identifying needs, offer specialized care planning and help connect families to community aging services. Alzheimer / Dementia family support services are offered; Home Caregiver Training – Includes In-Home Assistant, (required by Arkansas Law), In-Home Advanced, Alzheimer’s / Dementia; and Certified Nursing Assistant; CEU and in-service credit courses; Community Education programs relating to aging well are offered at our 125 seat auditorium.
