What Are Your Parents' Emotional Needs as They Age?

How do you know if your parents' emotional needs are being met? Do they call you often, even at inconvenient times? You're at work, and your mom calls and doesn't want to hang up. That can be one sign of loneliness.

What are your emotional needs as you age? Emotional needs cover several areas. How many of these are being met when it comes to your mom and dad?

#1 – A Choice in How They Live

Your parents need to have a say in how they live. They may want to downsize, but they may prefer to stay in their current home. They might want family caregivers or home care assistance providers helping out. Either way, they'll want to do as much independently as they can.

#2 – A Sense of Purpose

A sense of purpose is essential as you age. If you start to feel like you're in the way or a burden to others, your quality of life decreases. It can make you feel worthless and lead to depression and withdrawal. Make sure your parents have a role to fill to make them feel important.

#3 – Being Connected to Others

Socialization is tremendously important. Your parents need to feel that they're vital and still connected to those they love, whether it's family or long-time friends. They need ample opportunities to connect and interact with others each week.

#4 – Enough Privacy

While socialization is important, there's also the emotional need for space. Your parents need to have time alone when it's desired. If they move in with you as they age, they need a quiet area to retreat to that no one else can enter without their permission.

#5 – Feeling Secure and Safe

Being secure and feeling safe at home is also important. This often comes into play after a fall. If your mom fell on the stairs and no longer feels safe going up and down them, it will hurt her emotional health. The fear can be emotionally crippling.

#6 – Keeping Up With Self-Care

Your parents need to take care of themselves, too. They need to put themselves first and realize their limits. When they're feeling overwhelmed, they need to stop and do something they enjoy. It's okay for them to spoil themselves.

#7 – Volunteering Within the Community

While a connection to friends and family is essential, emotional health thrives when there is a solid connection to the community. Volunteering is one of the best ways to form that connection.

Home care assistance is one of the best ways to make sure your parents have a companion when you can't be there. Loneliness and isolation impact emotional health, but you can make sure they're supported. Call a home care agency and ask about home care assistance.
