Maintaining Senior Independence

By Susan Chiang

As the U.S. ages, studies show 89% of Americans over age 50 want to remain home

According to the National Institute for Aging, with the United States’ ongoing demographic shift toward an increasingly older population – along with the fact that 89% of Americans over age 50 wish to remain in their homes for as long as possible – conversations about the benefits and costs associated with aging in place will become increasingly critical.  Reasons cited for wanting to age independently are:

  • They feel independent in their current home
  • Their current home is conveniently located
  • They feel safe in their own home
  • They’re familiar with their neighborhood
  • They live close to family

The problem many families face with an aging loved one is how to balance time between their senior family members and their family at home.  The opportunity for seniors to “age in place” – which is the phrase used for seniors who want to remain living in their own home – doesn’t have to be a concern.  With an in-home care agency like Home Helpers® Home Care, services offered allow a win-win situation giving the family peace-of-mind knowing their loved one is taken care of and the senior the opportunity to keep their dignity and independence to remain at home.
