5 Delicious Superfoods for Good Health

By Ketan Patel

Chances are you have heard the term “superfoods” and the claims that they help you live a longer and healthier life. But do superfoods really do the job we think they do? Research is ongoing, but indications are that some foods that are jam packed with the nutrition we need to prevent health conditions like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Superfoods can bolster intestinal health, avert premature aging and reduce inflammation. Here are some of the best:

  1. Nuts

Nuts can help you age well by contributing to heart health. They are loaded with protein as well as heart healthy components like unsaturated fats, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, Vitamin E, plant sterols and L-arginine. The evidence is mounting that nuts can prevent dangerous heart rhythms that contribute to heart attacks, stop plaque development in your arteries leading to coronary artery disease, lower cholesterol and make your arteries less prone to blood clots. But be aware that you should eat only a handful of nuts (1.5 ounces) per day since they are high in calories.

  1. Blueberries

Blueberries are amazing superfoods that have the Vitamin C, potassium and the antioxidants you need to lower your risk of cancer and heart disease. They are thought to improve your memory by providing protection for your brain from inflammation, and they boost the communication between your brain cells. Inflammation also contributes to disorders like diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s and depression. Half of a cup of fresh blueberries on your breakfast cereal is all you need. Frozen blueberries work well, too.

  1. Quinoa

Quinoa, pronounced keen-wa, is a grain that is staple in the diet of many cultures worldwide. It has more high quality protein than other grains, along with high amounts of potassium, iron, and fiber. Naturally, gluten-free quinoa can be used in place of rice and pasta, and it can be eaten as a breakfast cereal. Quinoa is said to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer and high blood pressure. It can also help you keep the pounds off and remain at a healthy weight.

  1. Oranges

Delicious oranges are popular citrus fruits that have high concentrations of Vitamins C and A and antioxidants. They are known for reducing “bad” cholesterol levels and reducing high blood pressure. Some say that they have the ability to provide relief from the pain of arthritis with their anti-inflammatory properties. A glass of fresh orange juice each day may help you fight other inflammatory disorders like chronic fatigue, mood swings, and digestive issues. Other orange colored foods like carrots, pumpkins and sweet potatoes can fight inflammation as well.

  1. Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is packed with protein and contains probiotics, which are healthy bacteria that improves digestion. It also plays a role in regulating your immune system with high levels of Vitamin D. Just a 6-ounce serving contains the amount of protein you will find in 2-3 ounces of red meat.
