Fun Things to Do when the Grandkids Visit

By Ketan Patel

Making the most of time spent with the grandkids is a priority for many seniors. Thinking of some fun things to do can insure that the grandchildren will enjoy coming back to have fun with you. An in-home caregiver can help you think up ideas and gather the materials you will need for an enjoyable visit. Take a tip from elementary school teachers and keep more than one activity on hand.

Here are some easy suggestions for things to do when your grandchildren come.

  • Teach a Card Game: Card games are perfect for teaching kids how to follow directions, count, take turns, devise a strategy and become a good sport. Some great traditional card are tried and true activities that kids will look forward to. Card games kids love include Rummy, Go Fish and Concentration, which can be played with a standard deck of 52 cards.
  • Read a Book: Keep the grandkids in suspense and keep them coming back for more by reading a chapter book one chapter at a time, stored at your house, of course. Children love the attention and you will enjoy the seeing the world through their eyes. Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling are all great choices.
  • Make Holiday Decoration: Creating holiday decorations to enhance holiday celebrations is a fun activity to do with kids. An example would be to make a thankful Thanksgiving turkey, with a toilet paper roll for the body, craft store googly eyes, foam feet and a construction paper nose. Cut out turkey feathers in different construction paper colors, and have the grandkids write what they are thankful for on each one. If time allows, they can make one for each guest at the Thanksgiving table.
