This Thursday, (11-07) we will be helping to organize and serve the luncheon at the Vernon Senior Center to celebrate Veteran’s Day, at 12 pm. It is the 4th year in which Home Helpers teams up with the Senior Center in this vibrant community, to show appreciation to those who served. As we always do, Home Helpers will sponsor the veterans’ desert.
Veterans' Home Care in Vernon CT, North Central CT, and Western Mass
Home Helpers is proud to be a United States Department of Veterans Affairs Community Provider, authorized to care for veterans in North Central CT. We currently work together with three different VA locations to provide care, when they identify a veteran needing home care, senior care or Alzheimer’s care.
Over the past four years, we have been proud to assist hundreds of veterans and their spouses with activities of daily living, housekeeping, companionship, and running errands. Together with the VA, we assist those who have difficulty with their activities of daily living, which are the things a person cannot do without.
VA Programs for Senior Care and eligibility:
Community Care Network
The Community Care Network Program (formerly known as Veterans Choice Program) is one of several programs through which a Veteran can receive care from a community provider, paid for by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The VA can recommend this program in a few situations. One of those is when they are not able to directly provide the care needed promptly. The distance between the veteran’s home and the nearest VA facility is also a factor considered. Eligibility is usually based on the need for assistance with two or more activities of daily living, like eating, moving, bathing, etc.
The number of hours of care provided depends on the needs of the veteran. It could be from a few hours daily or weekly, to longer care shifts. If the veteran’s situation changes over time, the number of hours of care may increase.
To use the Program, Veterans must receive prior authorization from VA to receive care from a provider that is part of VA’s VCP network of community providers, like Home Helpers. The authorization is based on specific eligibility requirements and discussions with the Veteran’s VA provider. The VA will work with the Veteran to determine eligibility based on the Veteran’s specific circumstances.
How to Request Care
The easiest way is to call the Community Care Support Line: 866-606-8198. Call for additional information or to speak to one of the service agents on standby to assist you. If you prefer, you may also contact your local VA facility directly by phone or in person.
Individuals caring for elderly veterans often need a break from their caregiving responsibilities. In this case, a caregiver is assigned to take care of the veteran, while the family caregiver can get away from their duties for a few hours. That is called Respite Care.
After being authorized by the VA, Home Helpers offers qualified caregivers up to 30 days per year of VA Respite Care. Also, under Veterans Directed Care as part of HCBS, a veteran can choose to allocate some of their budgets on respite care services.
Aid & Attendance (A&A)
The Aid & Attendance (A&A) increased monthly pension amount may be added to your monthly pension amount if you meet one of the following conditions:
1) The veteran or spouse requires the aid of another person to perform personal functions required in everyday living, such as bathing, feeding, dressing, attending to the wants of nature, adjusting prosthetic devices, or protecting yourself from the hazards of your daily environment;
2) The veteran or spouse is bedridden, in that your disability or disabilities requires that you remain in bed apart from any prescribed course of convalescence or treatment;
3) The veteran is a patient in a nursing home due to mental or physical incapacity;
4) Your eyesight is limited to a corrected 5/200 visual acuity or less in both eyes, or concentric contraction of the visual field to 5 degrees or less.
Eligibility for Aid and Attendance
- Must have served at least 90 days of active duty with at least one day during a period of war.
- Haven’t received a Dishonorable discharge;
- If a surviving spouse is requesting care, he or she must have been married to the veteran at the time of his passing;
- Must require the assistance of another person to perform some of the daily activities of living;
- Must meet income and countable asset criteria established by the VA;
- Must be 65 years and older or totally disabled.
