Happy National Assisted Living Week!
We love celebrating our seniors! No matter the circumstance, the wonderful caregivers at Home Helpers genuinely care for the souls they touch, whether they are in assisted living in Tarpon Springs, they remain in their homes, or they are in skilled-care/ long-term care facilities.
The annual National Assisted Living Week, established by the National Center for Assisted Living [NCAL] in 1995, recognizes the importance of “staying connected” with seniors, and showing appreciation for those who care for them in whatever capacity, which is why the chosen theme this year is “Stay Connected”.
According to NCAL, “(This) observance provides a unique opportunity for residents, their loved ones, staff, volunteers and surrounding communities to celebrate the individuals served in assisted living and learn more about this sector of the long-term care profession.”*
Let’s dispel the myth that residents in assisted living communities are “helpless”. Many times those living in assisted care may need some help with this or that, but they ultimately don’t want to be alone. Perhaps, their family members do not live close enough to visit, or help. Other times, they could want to be surrounded with people just like them, with whom they can converse, socialize, play card & board games, and share meals.
Another misnomer is that seniors do not want to learn about today’s technology. That may be true for some, but not all. Often, mature adults are eager to learn more about their Smart phones and Facetime, or their computers, iPads, and Skype. All it takes is someone to guide them through the basics, so they can independently figure it out, or at least, navigate apps, emails, internet and the face-to-face options with which to communicate with loved ones. A little education can go a long way to helping seniors stay connected to family and friends, no matter where they make their home!
