Caregivers Proactively Protect Senior Independence

One of my friends who happens to be a caregiver received a call over the holidays from her younger sister’s BFF of nearly five decades. My caregiver friend knows the BFF’s family very well because both her family and the BFF’s family lived parallel to each other on parallel streets. There were 6 kids in the BFF’s family, and three kiddos in my friend’s family and they frequently played together with many other kids in the neighborhood back in the day.

My friend also knows the BFF’s Mom very well. So much so, she attended the Dad’s visitation several years ago, so she knows the 90+-year-old Mom has been living alone for some time.

The BFF confided to my friend that she had noticed her Mom seemed frailer and more confused over the holidays. She was so concerned, in fact, that she spoke to her siblings and planned a meeting to discuss what needed to happen to ensure their Mom’s safety and well-being when one of them was not available to be there with her.

The BFF noticed that there might be a need to provide some basic help for her Mom, which is why she reached out to my friend. Noticing the needs of our senior loved ones is very important to proactively protect their senior independence for as long as possible where they are most comfortable…at home.

In my blog, Be Aware of 12 Key Indicators of Senior Needs this Holiday Season, I outlined these warning signs and encouraged you to proactively pay attention to your senior loved ones when you were spending time together. The BFF obviously did!

So, now that needs have been identified, what can Home Helpers® do to make life easier for aging adults and their families? I have compiled a list of some of our many services here, so you have the information you need to make informed decisions about what senior care services might be necessary for your aging loved one.

  • Caregivers provide companion care to keep seniors company when they live alone, keep them engaged in meaningful conversation, and keep them socially active, as much as possible.
  • Caregivers also manage homemaker services like laundry, light housework, grocery shopping, and nutritional meal planning and preparation, which may be too difficult for seniors to manage alone, especially when they are up in age or they suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.
  • Alzheimer’s and dementia care helps ease the burden on family caregivers through specialized care services to ensure a higher quality of life for you, your senior loved one, and your entire family.
  • Specialized care services also include recuperative care, which may entail support for stroke recovery, or care following surgery, broken bones, serious falls, or rehabilitation.
  • Many of our highly skilled caregivers have training and experience in specialized care for clients with conditions including Parkinson’s, Down’s syndrome, COPD, and heart disease. Additionally, Home Helpers offers 24/7 live-In and shift care for those who require overnight assistance.
  • Wellness calls by Home Helpers® ensure seniors are faring well: they are eating, exercising, staying hydrated, and taking their medications properly. Wellness calls may include:
  • As part of our Cared-4℠ program, Home Helpers® provides a wake-up/tuck-in service that includes caregiver assistance with a senior’s morning and evening routines and tasks.
  • Caregivers provide respite carefor family caregivers, so can they can take the time they need for their own families, as well as for better physical and mental wellness.
  • Personal care includes caregiver assistance with bathing, dressing, meal planning and preparation, medication reminders and more.
  • In-home caregivers can be an answer to transportation woes when age, illness or disability leads to “driving retirement.” Seniors can remain independent and do not have to forego running personal errands or worrying about missing important doctor appointments due to transportation constraints. Caregivers will happily provide seniors with transportation assistance, promptly and safely each and every time.

A perfectly matched caregiver can assist with all of these things and so much more to make life easier for you or your special senior someone to keep you or them happy, healthy, safe, and independent. If you believe any of these services would be beneficial, I welcome the opportunity to meet you for a FREE Consultation to discuss your concerns about specific needs and create a Cared-4℠ Custom Care Plan designed with you, your family, and your senior loved one in mind.
