Older Americans Month 2023 Celebrates Aging Unbound

There was an interesting news report recently featuring Martha Stewart and her photo shoot as the oldest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover model at age 81.

As she’s aged before our eyes, Martha has remained very active in her garden, in her kitchen, around the home, on tv, with her magazine, and in a variety of enterprises with Snoop Dog. Talk about aging unbound! Martha’s latest venture makes the perfect lead into a special awareness theme this month.

Older Americans Month (OAM) is celebrated each May, and the Administration for Community Living (ACL) has announced that this year’s theme is Aging Unbound.

“(This) offers an opportunity to explore diverse aging experiences and discuss how communities can combat stereotypes. Join us in promoting flexible thinking about aging – and how we all benefit when older adults remain engaged, independent, and included,” explains ACL.

There are many ways we can recognize the 60th anniversary of OAM while challenging the narrative on aging in the Clearwater area. ACL suggests the following ways we can all participate in Aging Unbound.

  • Embrace the opportunity to change. Find a new passion, go on an adventure, and push boundaries by not letting age define your limits. Invite creativity and purpose into your life by trying new activities in your community to bring in more growth, joy, and energy.
  • Explore the rewards of growing older. With age comes knowledge, which provides insight and confidence to understand and experience the world more deeply. Continue to grow that knowledge through reading, listening, classes, and creative activities.
  • Stay engaged in your community. Everyone benefits when everyone is connected and involved. Stay active by volunteering, working, mentoring, participating in social clubs, and taking part in activities at your local senior center or elsewhere in the community.
  • Form relationships. As an essential ingredient of well-being, relationships can enhance your quality of life by introducing new ideas and unique perspectives. Invest time with people to discover deeper connections with family, friends, and community members.

The Aging Well Center @ The Long Center is a valuable local resource for seniors in Clearwater and surrounding areas. Their vision is to make Clearwater a community where older adults age in place successfully and remain independent. Their mission is to serve as a resource that facilitates services and activities promoting a high quality of life for Clearwater’s older adults.

The Aging Well Center offers seniors opportunities to take day trips, informative classes, arts and crafts, as well as counseling on subjects such as insurance. I found these examples in their May Program Guide, and the June Program Guide is packed full of great activities, too!

I’m grateful we have the opportunity to celebrate our seniors and support their Aging Unbound. Of course, I realize there are seniors with physical and mental health conditions that could hamper their ability to get out and participate in social activities. For these seniors, I gladly offer a FREE Consultation to discuss specific needs and create a personalized, comprehensive care plan to help improve their quality of life through wellness calls, companion care, homemaker services, and so much more.
