An Attitude of Gratitude Has Physical and Mental Health Benefits

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I extend my sincere gratitude to my Home Helpers team, our beloved clients and their families, my Community Warrior Power Partners, and the communities we all serve! Without you and your support, Home Helpers would not be the thriving, award-winning home care agency it is!

Gratitude is “The state of being grateful; THANKFULNESS.”1

Gratitude. It’s a simple act with extraordinary benefits, so there’s no better time to explore these benefits than the Thanksgiving and holiday season.

The Mayo Clinic Health System2 asserts that gratitude can improve mental and physical health. “Expressing gratitude is associated with a host of mental and physical benefits. Studies have shown that feeling thankful can improve sleep, mood, and immunity. Gratitude can decrease depression, anxiety, difficulties with chronic pain, and risk of disease. If a pill could do this, everyone would be taking it.”

A “magic pill” like this does not exist, so it is up to you and me to make conscious efforts to demonstrate gratitude whenever possible. We can start each morning when we awaken by thinking of someone for whom we are grateful. Send them a quick text, give them a call during the day, or send a nice note with words of gratitude and kindness.

Offer a sincere word of thanks to the clerk at the grocery store or the barista who makes your favorite latte. Take an extra step to thank a sanitation worker who picks up your trash each week. There are many opportunities afforded to each of us every day, so I encourage you to seek them out! Besides, it’s a really good feeling to let someone else know they are appreciated!

Do you know why we feel better when we offer gratitude to others? Experts at Mayo say, “Behavior changes biology. Positive gestures benefit you by releasing oxytocin, a hormone that helps connect people. Some people call it the love hormone.”

Being kind by expressing gratitude and appreciation will make everyone feel healthier and happier! You might be surprised by the many things in life for which we should be thankful. Having clean water to drink, watching a beautiful heron strut along the edges of a canal, seeing the vastness of the Gulf along our amazing Best Coast, there are numerous blessings to count each and every day.

If you are wondering where to start, Mayo suggests keeping a gratitude journal. “Set aside some time during your day, perhaps while attempting to relax your mind before sleep. Think back on your day and write down the things that went right. Our lives are full of reasons to feel thankful. Sometimes we need to remember to notice them. Acknowledging gratitude and being mindful support a positive shift to improve your mental well-being and health.”
