5 Types of Tea Have True Health Advantages for Seniors

5 Types of Tea have True Health Advantages for Seniors

I remember when I was a young girl, I received a tea set for Christmas. I proceeded to set up little tea parties with my dolls and stuffed animals, and sometimes I would invite my little brother or sister to join us. We didn’t use real tea, of course. It may have been a teapot half-full of room temperature water, but it was tea to me!

As an aging adult, I enjoy the real thing from time to time whether I’m alone or with family and friends. I find a cup of hot tea to be comforting and delicious!

“Drinking tea can be an incredibly beneficial habit for seniors looking to support their health and well-being. By incorporating tea into their daily routine, seniors can improve their physical and mental health. From its ability to support heart health, fight cancers, aid bone strength, and improve overall mental wellness, tea emerges as a powerful tool for promoting and maintaining senior health,” says Tea by Birdy.

Many different kinds of teas are available online or wherever groceries are sold, and they come in a variety of flavors and types. Thanks to Tea by Birdy, I’ve learned that there are 5 types of tea that have true health advantages for seniors I’d like to share just in time for Hot Tea Month.

Green Tea

Green tea is known for offering protection against various forms of cancers, aiding in weight management, enhancing heart health, and offering protection against Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease. Additionally, it is effective in stress reduction.

Black Tea

Black tea offers protection against cancers, aids in mental alertness, improves heart health and lowers cholesterol, maintains healthy gut bacteria, and helps in diabetes management as there's no need to add sugar.

White Tea

White tea provides protection against cancers, reduces the risk of heart disease, assists in weight management, protects teeth from bacteria, and offers protection against osteoporosis and inflammation.

Oolong Tea

Oolong tea is known for its properties of protection against cancers, anti-aging benefits, protection from diabetes, weight management, improving heart health, and boosting energy and mood.

Herbal Tea

The benefits of herbal tea are vast and specific to each type, including stress and sleep management, promoting skin, teeth, and nail health, aiding digestion, and acting as a sleep aid.

Healthline explains that herbal teas are derived from herbs, spices, fruits, and flowers and recommends 10 types of healthy herbal teas to try.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile may help enhance sleep quality, improve digestive health, and stabilize blood sugar levels.

Peppermint Tea

Studies have found that peppermint oil may help relieve nausea, cramping, and stomach pain.

Ginger Tea

Ginger tea may help reduce nausea and improve blood sugar and lipid levels in people with diabetes.

Hibiscus Tea

Hibiscus tea may help reduce blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, and decrease oxidative stress.

Echinacea Tea

Echinacea tea is commonly used to shorten the duration of the common cold. However, more research is needed.

Rooibos Tea

Preliminary evidence suggests that rooibos tea may help improve bone health and reduce heart disease risk, but more studies are needed.

Sage Tea

Several studies have found that sage improves cognitive function, memory, and heart health.

Lemon Balm Tea

Preliminary studies have found that lemon balm tea may help increase antioxidant levels, improve heart health, and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Rose Hip Tea

Rose hip tea may reduce inflammation and pain associated with arthritis. It may also support weight management.

Passionflower Tea

Studies have found that passionflower tea may improve sleep and anxiety.

Tea by Birdy says, “Remember, moderation is key - aim for no more than eight cups of tea per day, or around 300 - 400mg of caffeine. It's always wise to check with a doctor before introducing new types of tea into your diet, especially if you're on medications. So, sip your way to a healthier and happier life with tea!”
