Celebrate Healthy Aging in Safety Harbor

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found a decrease in death rates from 2012-2103, in the age-specific group 75-84. However, an increase was observed in persons ages 55-64, over the same year. The most prevalent causes of death in America are heart disease and cancer.

Carolyn Worthington, editor-in-chief of Healthy Aging Magazine said, “It’s never too late to find a new career, a new sport, passion, or hobby.”

Translation? Age is a just a number. As the cliché goes, “You’re as young as you feel.”

Healthy aging in Safety Harbor can be as easy as discovering your passion and following it! Anna Mary Robertson Moses, otherwise known as “Grandma Moses”, embarked upon her passion for art at the ripe age of 78.

Perhaps you are not interested in learning how to paint, or pursuing art. There are many hobbies and activities with which you can get involved, to stay busy, healthy and active.

Walking is important for heart health and healthy aging. Take an evening stroll or a brisk morning walk to exercise your muscles and joints and awaken your senses. If you don’t like to walk alone for security reasons, ask a neighbor, friend or family member to join you. If you have a dog you can safely manage on a leash, take him/her for a walk…they love that!

If you do not have a dog, perhaps you can volunteer at a local humane society or rescue. There is nothing more uplifting than spending time with a lonely, loving animal. After all, their love is unconditional and boundless, and animals have a way of brightening even a dark day!

Schedule health screenings and physicals this month, to ease your mind of potential health concerns. Knowing your body is working as it should, can help your psyche from becoming negative and fearful, which, in turn, can be depressing and debilitating.

Reach out to friends and family members and spend quality time catching-up. It can ease worry and lift spirits to hear a loved one’s voice and feel close to them.

If you or a senior you love are unable to do any of these things without help, have health issues that prohibit activity, or are no longer able to get out and about as before, the compassionate caregivers at Home Helpers are ready, willing and able to assist. Reach out to these caring professionals for more helpful tips for healthy aging in Safety Harbor, or should you need transportation assistance, help with shopping, or the company of a loving companion. After all, that’s why they are there 24/7, 365! (727) 240-3059
