5 Ways to Have a Fun Day with Your Senior Loved-One

By Jonathan Marsh, Owner

Hi, Fellow Community Members!

Just a quick blog post today to give you five ways to have fun with your senior loved-one. Cherish these moments you have and focus on the positive!

1. Start with Smiles
Smiles are contagious! Smile more and you will see that your loved one will smile more with you.

Studies have shown that smiling relaxes the nervous system and sends more oxygen to the brain.

2. Add Great Conversation
Who doesn't love a great conversation!?!

We posted a couple days ago about July being "Social Wellness" Month. Some of the health benefits of social wellness include a longer life, a healthier heart, better response to stress, and a stronger immune system. Therefore, when you are enjoying time with your loved one and having a great conversation, you are enhancing the social wellness of you both.

3. Get Some Fresh Air
We all say it and there is really a benefit. From walking outside to exercise and boost your immune system...to energizing yourself...to calming and relaxing yourself.  In short, it is great to put the electronics down, turn off the TV, and to get outside....and it is great to do it with your loved one.  Here is a great article about getting that fresh air in your system!  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/08/tk-ways-fresh-air-impacts_0_n_5648164.html

4. Don't Sweat the Small Stuff
I read a book some years ago called "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff...and It's All Small Stuff" by Richard Carlson. I recall reading that book at a very important juncture in my life. It really got me to take a step back and to realize most "stuff" is small stuff in the grand scheme of things and to live my life.

Be careful to not blow things out of proportion and do not obsess over what you cannot change. Focus on the now and enjoy the time spent with your loved one.

5. Do Something You Both Enjoy
Some of my favorite times with my dad are when we incorporate watching movies, bowling, and sporting clays. Going through old pictures and listening to music is always fun as well.

The things you can come up with to do together are endless. If you can think of anything, check the local paper for local events, check out local craft stores for events that they have...Painting with a Twist is always a fun option as well.

Have fun!....because Life is short!

Yours truly,

Jonathan Marsh
